I recently went up to the Lake Tahoe area with the family over my kids’ spring break at the beginning of April. On the way back to Orange County we drove through the eastern Sierras. The snow was so great this year I was annoying my family with all of my photo reference stops!
Among other photos, I got this great one of Convict Lake. It’s just south of Mammoth Lakes, CA, just off of US-395. I loved the rugged peaks and the reflections in the half-melted lake. I also really love the challenge of painting the part where you’ve got the mud and rocks underwater with the reflections of the sky, rocks, and mountains overlaid on top of the water.
Here’s my result, captured in video from start to finish. If you’d like to see a high-resolution zoom of the resulting painting (or buy the original or prints), you can check it out in my gallery here.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it!
